Power of a Purse: Giving Back to Women in Need
It took less than an hour for 100 women to snatch up nearly 350 handbags. No, it wasn't an amazing sale in New York City, but a fundraiser at the YWCA in Troy.
Mothers&More, a non profit organization that helps mothers in need, put on the event, giving out free luxury handbags. It's the brainchild of Tara Brettholtz, who calls the event "lightening in a bottle". As mother's day draws near, Brettholtz figured: Why not give mother's in need the one thing (besides shoes) that every woman loves, a purse?
"The idea of the purse is fundamental. Every woman carries one, I think women connected with it very, very easily, " says Brettholtsz.
The event was held Sunday afternoon. During that time, The women received free handbags, hair and makeup makeovers; anything to give these mom's a new outlook on life. Mom's like 35 year old Ejah Gay.
"I refuse to become a victim of circumstances, these opportunities are out here for everyone," says Gay.
Gay lost her job and was evicted from her home a few months ago. Devastated by her recent bout of bad luck, Gay says she's determined to succeed in life. At least on this Sunday, she's beaming from ear to ear, captivated by the power of the purse; a new coach purse.
" I make this bag smile," says Gay.
*Similar events were also held in Massachusetts, Ohio, Wisconsin and California.
*Next year they plan to target 100 cities, nationwide.
